I don't know about you, but I like to keep several things handy for Sweetpea in the car - just in case we might need them. At any one time I like to have some diapers and wipes, a spare change of clothes, a towel, and a few toys. Depending on the season there might be an extra hat and mittens or some sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses...
Keeping this stash organized and in it's proper place was a challenge until I discovered an easy solution - a compartmentalized reusable grocery bag! Mine was free with a few bottles of wine I bought at Kroger. It's a bit smaller than a standard reusable grocery bag and fits wonderfully behind the front seat or tucks nicely in the trunk.

I keep a an old quilt in the car at all time, folded up on the back seat - actually, it created the perfect height, for the small round laundry basket, that I picked up at the dollar store, that I corrala all of Madaline's in the car toys. I have a long basket that I keep CD's in and there are always at least a sweatshirt or a fleece in the back seat as well, for me, hubby and Madaline. The, when I leave the house, all I need to make sure I have are some snacks and we are good to go.
Kman is much older so not as complicated as when he was younger. For our recent plane ride, I packed chapter books and some crafts that work well on the plane. Every stage you always have to be thinking!
I commute 35 miles each way with my son. I found toy bins at Ikea that are perfect to sit on the seat and be put away. a small one for food/snacks - chips, candy necklaces, fruit snacks, crackers (regular and graham) and a few other items. the bigger one I use for toys - little handheld ones that I can hold up, he says yes or no and I put back in. I also keep a small trashcan behind the drivers seat for trash. if someone is riding in my car its easy to put the bins in the trunk or next to his car seat.

I have a collapsible basket in the car for all the boys' sports needs during the spring and fall. It makes such a big difference for them to put all their stuff in one place at all times. Just stopping by from SITS to say HI
Great topic! I use an organizer that hangs on the back of the passenger seat to keep books, crayons, games, and toys during long car trips. It's the best!
My gang is older, although I kept one of the thin plastic diaper wipes holders as it fits nicely in the pocket behind the seats... always need wipes:)
In the trunk I have a basket with bug spray, band-aids, blanket, notebook and pen, a soccer ball ( great for unexpected waits) , and one of the large magna doodles drawing boards. Seriously, it is great for all ages, we pass it around playing hangman etc, the teen boys/men friends of my sons even draw goofy things , and my girls' friends leave little surprise joke pictures or notes to each other. No mess, no pieces. I love it
